The Xanthine Oxidase kit measures xanthine oxidase activity in biological fluids, tissue homogenates and dairy products.
Xanthine Oxidase (XO) is an enzyme with an important role in the metabolism of purines. It is responsible of the catalysis of a two step oxidation reaction that converts hipoxanthine to xanthine and then xanthine to uric acid, where hydrogen peroxide and superoxide are produced. The rate of uric acid production, which can be monitored at 290 nm, is proportional to the activity of the xanthine oxidase.
Xanthine oxidase products:
Xanthine: Poorly water-soluble. This may lead gallstones in the renal tract and mitosis.
Uric acid: Accumulation of uric acid is related to gout and arthritis.
Reactive oxygen species: They are involved in oxidative stress in multiple pathologies and conditions.
