Mycotoxins: Zearalenone
LIBIOS offers you various high-quality solutions including consumables for the determination of zearalenone used by analytical laboratories, industries and research institutes.
Zearalenone is an estrogenic mycotoxin found mainly in corn, in North America, Japan and Europe. It can be present in large quantities in developing countries, particularly when maize is grown in more temperate conditions, for example at high altitude. Zearalenone is a field mycotoxin, meaning that its development takes place when the plant is still standing.
Zearalenone, co-produced with deoxynivalenol by Fusarium graminearum, is associated with DON with acute episodes of mycotoxicosis in humans.
Contact with contaminated corn leads to hyperestrogen in livestock, primarily in pork, which is characterized mainly by vulvar and mammary swelling and infertility and poses real concerns in terms of breeding livestock.
Some evidence from animal experiments suggests a carcinogenic effect of zearalenone.
Zearalenone is regulated in Europe in bakery products, cereals and derivatives, corn oil. The maximum rates for zearalenone and certain other contaminants in foodstuffs are laid down in Regulation (EC) 1881/2006 and its subsequent amendments.
