Mycotoxins: Deoxynivalenol
LIBIOS offers you various high-quality solutions including consumables for the determination of DON used by analytical laboratories, industries and research institutes.
Deoxynivalenol (DON) or vomitoxin is a mycotoxin of trichothecenes family (B group).
DON is produced by various fungal contaminants of Fusarium type (Fusarium graminearum, Fusarium culmorum, Fusarium roseum, ... ) which contaminate wheat, barley, oats, corn and even rice grains during flowering.
High levels of DON contamination have been reported during rainy years. This toxin mainly develops in fields.
DON is clearly the most common Fusarium mycotoxin. It contaminates different grains, particularly corn, wheat and their derivatives (bakery products) in developed and developing countries.
Emetic syndromes and feed rejection caused in livestock by the presence of DON in feed led to this mycotoxin being called emetic toxin.
Ingestion of DON may have caused acute access of mycotoxicoses in humans in India, China and in Japanese countryside. The episode in China in 1984-85 was triggered by corn and mouldy wheat; Symptoms were under the form of nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, dizziness and headache. The human health effects of DON are: haematotoxicity, immunomodulation, skin toxicity.
In Europe, the maximum rates for DON and certain other contaminants in foodstuffs are laid down in Regulation (EC) 1881/2006 and its subsequent amendments
